This Mission to Bhutan is a political discourse about the relations between British India and one of its northern neighbors. Previously only a handful of British visitors had been into Bhutan. At the time of his visit during 1863-4, Ashley Eden had to deal with a ruling clique that was internally disunited. With this power struggle in progress, his mission to seek an end to the disruptive elements that were making raids and incursions into the Duoars proved impossible. Much of the book is devoted to the historical and political background, the culture and the nature of Bhutan. Above all, the author seeks to place on record as many of the facts surrounding the mission as possible.
